I was in Memphis for the 2019 Ameripolitan Awards, and upon leaving, I had to stop by Sun Records to pay my gratitude for the recordings Roy Orbison did there. Anyone who knows me, knows Roy is my Elvis.
I was in tourist mode, trekking around town, but wearing my custom made Mode Merr Proper Circle Skirt. I found some heavenly gothic fabric and handed it over to Angela to create my one-of-a-kind garment. These circle skirts are great for my traveling lifestyle, as they wash easily and the pockets are huge! Depending how I style it, I can go from casual to evening. I customized my skirt further by adding a sprinkling of gunmetal grey rhinestones myself.
Here is my skirt in a brighter shot outside the Texas Ranger Museum in Waco. Plaid shirt from an Austin thrift store, vintage Skinny Puppy band shirt that I modified into a bodysuit, vintage glasses from Allyn Scura and cowboy boots custom made by Ammons.
Sun Records was founded in 1950 and was an independent label for records. This is where legends like Roy, Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash, Carl Perkins, Charlie Rich & Jerry Lee Lewis recorded. I was told it's also the subject of a Netflix series, but I haven't seen it.
My boyfriend and I did the full tour, going both upstairs and into the still operating recording studio. It was really interesting and something worth doing if you are a rockabilly music fan. It didn't take more than an hour to do the tour then stop by the gift shop and café.
Parking was easy to find behind the building and the tours are ongoing.
